A WORD OF CAUTION, by Dr. Rafat Abbasi, MD, FACOG, Endocrinology and Infertility Specialist, and Rainbow Families Board Member. (Note: This piece on NPR indicated promise especially for people in the LGBTQ community, here is the LINK).

An interesting topic was discussed on NPR on January 15, 2020 regarding the treatment of fertility using in vivo (in the body) fertilization. The study was performed in Mexico. Women (egg donors) were given injections of hormones to stimulate ovulation and then intrauterine insemination was performed with the partner/donor sperm. Embryos were then flushed out of the uterine cavity (lavage) and tested for chromosomal abnormalities. These results were compared to embryos that were the result of conventional in vitro fertilization. There was no difference in the rates of chromosomal abnormalities.

Several ethical concerns have arisen from this study. 1)The patients were paid $1400 per attempt which is more than two months average wages in that area. 2) Some pregnancies had to be terminated because all the embryos created were not flushed out of the uterus. 3) Other studies have not been performed using similar techniques to ensure the validity of the results. 4) The medication as well as the surgical procedure used for termination are associated with potentially serious side effects.

The study would have to be done in the United States under FDA guidelines and IRB (Institutional Review Board) supervision before the procedure could be used in the United States.
